In plants the cells grow by both cell division, producing more cells, and elongation, the cells get longer. A plant grows differently than an animal. A dormant plant seed only sprouts when certain conditions occur. Then the seed will split open and the new plant will grow.
In animals, cells usually don't grow bigger, but divide to make more cells.
Within the plant or animal itself, there are many things that happen as it grows. The information that tells your body how to grow is stored in your DNA. Some DNA came from your mother, and the rest from your father. This means that your DNA makes you different from anyone else in the world(unless you have an identical twin). Every cell in your body came from one single cell. This means that the cells needed to change into different types of cells. Some of the cells also needed to move from one area of your body to another.
There are other organisms that are not plants and animals, such as fungi. In fact, even though we are very different from plants, biologists now know that we have more in common with plants than with many of the other organisms that share the Earth! The link below will take you to a site that shows what biologists know about the tree of life. It will show how similar your DNA is to a plant's DNA.
I know that's hard to believe, but it's true! We have only learned it recently, by studying the DNA hidden inside the cells of different organisms.
Every living creature has DNA, it is like the blueprint for a building. And contains the information on how to grow and make new cells.
So DNA is something that you have in common with every single living thing AND makes you different from each and every one of them!

When an animal or plant grows, the cells have to undergo division called mitosis. This allows the cells to divide and still maintain their original properties. By dividing themselves, the cell number increase exponentially, allowing the cells to assist and/or keep up with the growth rates

Some cells will grow, for example: nerve cells. Most other cells will undergo cellular division increasing the number of cells, for example: skin cells, blood cells, muscle, ect. In an animal they divide in most, if not all, cases.
