It depends on what cat you're looking for. Personally I'd get a cat that matches what you're looking for. Long haired breeds need to be brushed several times a week, short haired cats are a good choice. But if you're looking for a low maintance breed try asking someone at a petstore or adopting a mix breed cat from an animal shelter.

It does depend on what kind of cat you want, but I think you should get one from a shelter. Just because a cat doesn't cost $100's of dollars and come with papers doesn't mean it doesn't have traits to consider. Also many will appreciate you taking them out of the shelter.

Be prepared to brush long hair cats often, if you don't want or can't do that, get a shorter hair variety. Learn about the breeds and have some idea of what the types you are looking for look like. But keep in mind that like people even though they may have certain traits, cats have individual personalities which will grow and change with the interaction you give them.

If you want a cat to play fetch, play fetch with it (we got my kitten to do that). If you want a cat to sit on your lap and give you lots of attention, then hold it a lot and give it lots of attention. They aren't dogs, but they can be trained or influenced at least if you just give them the time and attention!

We have gotten all of our cats from shelters or as kittens that strays have had. I think my babies are wonderful members of our family and their varied personalities are fun. Also, their lives were saved and the joy they've brought to mine has been a wonderful exchange where we both have won over and over again!!!

I've noticed that tuxedo cats seem to have a more friendly personality but tabbies in my experience are smarter and loving but a bit more independent. The thing that makes the most difference though is the way you treat them, the way you interact with them, and basically how you raise them.

Also, know that you don't have to get a kitten to influence the kind of cat you get. My sister & her husband were living in Germany (military) and decided to get a cat from the shelter. They took their lab to help them pick one out. The dog liked this one older black cat who was going to be put to sleep the next day so they immediately know it was their choice. The cat was about 10 they think when they adopted it and was a very skittish cat as he'd been abused as a younger cat and actually had spots on his body where fur no longer grew from being burnt. But over a few years the cat came to trust them all and even other people. By the time the cat died of a quick natural death - appeared heart attack nearly 6 years later - he was a friendly, happy, well mannered cat that lived a wonderful 9th life. :)

Good luck, give the gift of life to a sweet cat or kitten.

I would also recommend getting a cat from the shelter because cats vary in tempermant so much! Just picking a breed doesn't necessarily mean that your cat will "act" like the breed is supposed to act.

But if you are dead set on a purebred cat, I would recommend an American Shorthair. They come in different colors, but the black and silver tabby is the most common. I got one while I was in Japan (I tried adopting one from the local shelter but they wouldn't let me so I went to the pet store), and he is gorgeous! They are very friendly but very independent cats. They like to be around humans but not necessarily in their laps all the time. They are short haired, which is nice. But all cats are different! Spend some time with the cat before you adopt it and find out what his/her personality is like.

Get a lively, active, intelligent, healthy cat from the shelter. Better yet - get two. One cat gets bored, and can be destructive. Two cats entertain each other. That's important if you're going to leave it home during the day while you're at work, school, wherever.

I'm a big fan of saving a tabby from the pound. But if I were to ever get a breeded cat it would be a scottish fold, so cute.

I think you should get ether a Bombay cat, A Munchkin cat, A Manx cat, or A Pixie-Bob.

They are very cute and they all are short hair Cats. So You don't have to worry about so much hair lol

I hope I helped

You should get a ragdoll. They are the most adorable and cuddly cat around. Either that, or get a Himalayan or Persian. I have a Siamese and a Ragdoll. Ragdolls are so beautiful. They are big cats! Good luck!

Don't buy a cat - go to the shelter and rescue one! There are so many who need homes and I know you'll find one that you will fall in love with!
