The girl above had the right answer. It was a disease in monkeys that started in Africa that was transferred to humans. I've heard that it was because people were eating the monkey's brains. Why it got to be so widespread is beyond me.
It is transmitted through unprotected sex with anyone who carries the disease (not just prositutes and homosexuals - the disease does not discriminate). I've heard that people have also contracted the disease through blood transfusions in which the blood used was infected, but I'm not sure if this is just one of those stories or if it has actually happened.
Drug users also transmit the disease by sharing needles (if the drug requires it).
Blood and bodily fluids are the only things that can carry the disease; however, you will not get Aids by kissing someone who has it. Wearing a condom during sex will help protect you from contracting the disease, but I myself wouldn't risk it.
(I know I've given way more information than you asked for, but I wanted to be informative in case someone reading the answers was not familiar with the ways it can be transferred).

Agree with ganga above. There was a report on NPR not too long ago about the latest research that said, in a nutshell, that the transmission from wild monkeys to humans started in Cameroon during colonisation. Do a search on nrp.org for AIDS research and listen. It's quite interesting.

There are all kinds of conspiracy theories and suspicions around HIV/AIDS. It's a virus, where does any virus come from? I doubt that anyone really knows. The common cold is a virus, where did it come from? The same for cold sores, warts of all kinds and any number of other viruses that infect and affect people all the time. And why do people get any of them? When one is figured out, it'll probably lead to a lot more information on all of them. HIV is an epidemic and on the heals of other viral epidemics like small pox, chicken pox and polio. Yours is the question of the last few decades.

Two species of HIV infect humans: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is hypothesized to have originated in southern Cameroon after jumping from wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) to humans during the twentieth century. HIV-2 is hypothesized to have originated from the Sooty Mangabey (Cercocebus atys), an Old World monkey of Guinea Bissau, Gabon, and Cameroon. HIV-1 is more virulent, more easily transmitted and is the cause of the majority of HIV infections globally, while HIV-2 is less easily transmitted and is largely confined to West Africa.
Please see the webpages for more details on AIDS / HIV.

Point is if you have unprotected sex with him then you need to get tested. If it comes out negative then wait 6 months and get tested again just to be sure. It takes about 6 months to start affecting you. If you haven't slept with him and plan to use protection of course! If you have a choice not to (which you always do) the don't because you can never be too safe. Wish you the best.

It was a white guy that did it with a monkey with AIDS. He was in Africa when it happened. Then the worst part was that he was bisexual. So he went back to his country in Europe and it spread from there.
And people always think African people started it.
I hope that helped you.
