I saw an underwater Christopher Walken grab a gun in 'Batman Returns' and wondered if a real pistol, recently submerged, would fire. Whatabout a gun that gets wet? How long after getting it wet will it still fire. Are water and weapons deadly enemies? Which dryland weapons work the best under water? I'm not plotting any underwater mayhem, I just never really thought about it and would like to know since the cost of such research is probably quite high if it ruins weapons.

some types of guns work underwater

that is easily an fairly complicated question to respond to, and a detrimental ONE, too. Firing a gun with the barrel finished of water is amazingly distinct from firing a gun with a barrel finished of air. one element you need to in no way do is attempt to fireside a gun whose barrel hasn't been completely drained of water - that ought to explode the barrel. you are able to in no way appropriately fireplace JHP bullets underwater - in no way! the in undemanding words ammo which will properly be carried less than water is cartridges with both sealed casemouths and primer wallet. not one of the less costly WalMart manufacturers are in all likelihood to proceed to exist being submerged for more effective than, say, an hour. Now, firing any gun underwater will be particularly unsafe for your wellness. some idiots who've tried this have lengthy gone deaf for existence; some have given themselves longterm migraine issues; and, believe it or no longer, there are those who've given themselves, both, heavily damaged inner organs or perhaps deadly coronary heart attacks from the effectual water-transmitted percussion. in simple terms sticking the gun underwater and holding your head and body out, ought to effect contained in the gun exploding on your hand. Bullets, also, do not go back and forth all that far or hit all that not common underwater. With maximum handguns after 6 to eight ft you're not any further going to be hitting a lot harder than a slingshot. each thing seen, taking pictures any gun underwater is risky, stupid, ill-seen, and often ineffective. With in undemanding words 3 to 5 ft of helpful distance an underwater, 'bang-stick' is a much more effective positive idea. (a lot more effective appropriately, 'muffled' too.)

Bullets fired into water, or in water will not travel far because of the water density. You will be lucky to get a bullet past 2 feet under water. If you were to fire a handgun round into a bucket fill with at least 18" of water, the bucket of water will actuall serve as a bullet trap.

well i was always told that under water and if the gun barrel is filled with water the pressure will be too much and the barrel will split or explode from the pressure. Glocks aren't made to be shot in the water they are made to work after being in water and they say even saltwater.

This has been tested by the Mythbusters on Discovery Channel. Some firearms do shoot nderwater. Furthermore, pistols seem to have the best chances for kill shots while submerged

Some do, I own a glock 23 that will fire even in salt water. It truly depends on the quality of the fire-arm as well as the ammunition.

It is always a good idea to drain the water out of the barrel of a high velocity weapon like the M16 before firing it.

Yes, they will work...

Its not a matter of the gun, rather the ammunition... If the powder inside the cartridge stays dry, it will fire..

The bullet will have a lot of resistance and I wouldn't nescessarily want to try it..as there would be excessive pressure on the barrel.

Yes a gun will fire under water. The bullet will be vastly slowed by the waters resistance.

yes, dry powder/primers will fire, water will slow down the projectile, and would only be deadly if it was right against something when fired- spooky thought about the water resistance inside the barrel and if you'd get a HUGE amount of blowback

Very few guns work underwater. Regular guns (shotgun, pistol) do not work underwater. However there are some guns made especially for underwater use.
