That's variable. Anything can be an "idol" if it interferes with our personal relationship with Christ.
Of course there are the obvious ones: sex, money, drugs, even food & tv (Yahoo's Ask the Planet...lol)
People can also exalt thier religeous institution and work before the Lord thus making even those an idol before the Lord.
Pretty much anything can be an idol if it dominates your life more than the Lord.

Great question...just hope you take the time to read this as it was 2 days ago you asked it.
Idolatry is creating a "god" to suit yourself. Common phrases of idolaters is, "My god would never send anyone to hell." or "To me, god is very accepting of people who have multiple sexual partners." Common buzz words of idolaters is "to me", "my god", or "I believe." It is okay "to believe" in something, but when it is not of God, it becomes idolatry.
When we create a "god" to suit our self, that is idolatry. Anything we put before God and what is contrary to what He says in His word is idolatry.
I am guilty of being an idolater and am desperately wicked at heart without God. That is why i've repented and put my trust in Jesus Christ for salvation. If it wasn't for His grace and mercy, i'd definately be judged and deserving of hell.

Some people killed themselves when Curt Kobain committed suicide.
That's extreme.
Could be considered idolatry.
Many people imitate aspects of movie stars and singers, that might be why they are called "idols".
Imitating anyone who has celebrity staus is such a slippery slope to idolatry.
Although some make 'money' their god.
They chase after it as if it would give them life.

I think the main one is money. Everyone is obsessed with getting as much of it as they can. If you think about it, the quote, "The love of money is the root of all evil" is correct. Almost all our crime and conflicts have to do with money. Sad to think that greed will probably be the downfall of our world.

I often see people exalt their careers and jobs, boyfriends and girlfriends, weekends (choosing their own pleasures and not "reedeming the time"), and much more over God. "God is a jealous God" -Bible
