Tonic water contains quinine, which is very bitter and is a prophylactic against malaria. It was used for that purpose by the Brits in colonial India. Keep it simple. Add a few drops of quinine to a litre of soda water, just enough to make it slightly bitter. Then add about 2 tablespoons of lemon or lime juice. Then rebottle, so it doesn't lose its fizz.

I tend to use Lipton family-sized tea bags because I can find them in about any store, in about every state. However, I've used Tetley and Luzianne, as well. I personally use decaffeinated tea bags because I feel that some brands of caffeinated tea have a slight after taste. But you can make sweet tea this way, no matter the tea bags you choose. For one gallon of prepared tea: Bring anywhere from 1 to 1 1/2 quarts of water (depending on the size of your pot -- it doesn't make too much difference how much water you use) to a rolling boil. Place four family-sized tea bags in the boiling water and use a spoon to dunk them under the boiling water for just about 30 seconds, or so, before removing the entire pot from the heat. Cover the pot with a snug lid and let it sit, covered (steeping), for approximately 10 minutes. Pour two cups of granulated sugar into a gallon container and then pour the tea from the pot (after ten minutes) into the container. Add enough hot water to reach the one gallon mark, and stir well. The sugar should dissolve almost instantaneously after the hot tea is poured in.

If you get one, please post. It certainly contains more than quinine and soda. Sugar is high on the list. I'd love to get a recipe as i'd like to make a sugar reduced one that does not taste awful.
