Keep it on a leash. Or let it play a little then hose it off. Whatever you have time for.

1 Add sunshine to the mud to dry it up.
2 Or remove mud and replace with cement/ rocks/ quicksand
3 Or move to the cement jungle

good luck, everytime my ch. lab takes a stroll on his own his goes down to the bog by our house plays for 10 or 15 mintues and them comes home mud from head to tail tip

Sometimes if you put some of it's pooh in the muddy area/dirt area where one likes to dig around, this will repel the animal from going there.
Maybe it will dig elsewhere then you have a problem or game of hide the pooh everywhere......
