Try freecycle.

http://www.freecycle.org/finder

People post things they want to give away free, and others post things that they are looking for.

There are a LOT of local freecycle groups, world-wide.

All you have to do is go pick the stuff up. You can arrange to go to the person's address, or agree to meet at some neutral location for the exchange (shopping center, for example). The cabinets that someone else wants to tear out and throw away might be your dream kitchen! :-))

Signing up for freecycle costs nothing, and does not obligate you in any way. If someone responds to your post about "wanted: kitchen cabinets," and you meet them, and look at the cabinets, and you do not want them, all you have to say is, "No, thanks! Good luck!"

Good luck!

I'd ask any apartment complex owners if you could buy their old cabinets. I live in a complex and everytime someone moves out..they replace stuff that is marred, and I've seen them pull out cabinets without much damage. you'd need to repair the damage-but would be alot cheaper

Look for someone who is remodeling their kitchen. Many people will give away their old cabinets or sell them cheap to someone willing to cart them away. You can let people know you will take them by putting notices up on public bulletin boards. Also for upper shelves, look for pallets that are often tossed on free wood piles. Just sand and paint and for the price of hardware you have instant storage or display space.

try going on craigslist.com they have a large free want ad section-- put your ad on the wanted listing and ask for free kitchen cabinets. You'd be amazed at the stuff people give away

If you have pre-existing cabinets you can look into canbinet refacing. IT's a fraction of the cost of replacement.
