YES!! You should give your dog heartworm preventative medicine if your dog ever has a chance of being bitten by a mosquito....your vet will want to do a blood test to make sure that your dog does not have heartworms now and then will prescribe a dosage based on the dogs weight..what is good about most heartworm meds, is that if your dog comes in contact with a puppy or other dog with worms (roundworms, hookworms, etc...) your dog is protected. Your dog can pick up worms just by being in contact with an infected dogs feces. It might be costly to have the blood test and keep your dog on the meds all year long....but in the long run, your dog will never get heartworms which can be fatal.
Hope this helps! We have FOUR dogs on heartworm meds!! $$$$$$$ but worth every penny!

Putting your animal on heartworm prevention is the most imperative and important thing you can do for dog. Whether its ano indoor or outdoor dog, you should always be on it, personally i always recommend to our clients revolution over doing either advantage/frontline along with heartguard, at the very least you should do the heartguard, but its great to use the revolution and knock out the fleas and the heartworms in one little tube. Any vet clinic you go to will tell you the same thing. If you havent been in for your annual, you definitely need to get a heartworm test, and the vet will probably make you before he can give you your prevention. Anways i hope that helps. Good luck.

Heartworm is a real threat. Mosquitoes infect the dog. If it is winter time, then mosquitoes are not out, there is no threat to the dog unless you live in the southern states.
Do go to the vet and have the dog tested for heartworm.
Before you go, read Dr. Malernee's article on heartworm. He is a real vet in Boca Raton, FL Go to his website and click on articles. He has some interesting thoughts on the preventative and links you into the government's website to prove his point.

Dogs should always be on heartworm preventative. Indoors or outdoors, in a heartworm infested area or not. Even through the winter.
Heartworms are very preventable but very expensive to cure.

Yes, you should. Mosquitos cause hearworms. I have my dog on preventative, she is an inside dog, but, I don't take chances with her. You have to have it tested for heartworms before you can start a prevention. Take it to the vet and get it tested. If everything is good, buy the prevention before you leave.
Good Luck! :)

Yes....if you want a healthy dog and one that lives long as a companion or to enjoy. The dog must be free of heartworm to begin with...tested and then given a dose as prescribed by the vet and medicine////// Details from your vet...BIG YES to heartworm meds....

Absolutely.I know a dog that got heartnorms and it took him FOREVER to gecover after his owners got rid of them. Just make sure he gets the correct dosage, or the dog could get heartworms anyway.
