The only need to be removed if they become impacted or are growing in crooked. Not everyone gets them removed.

Most dental professionals feel they SHOULD be removed at a younger age. The older you get the more serious the procedure is. They need to be removed due to the fact that pockets can form around the roots and deteriorate the bone in your jaw. Also, infection can occur if you leave them in. Additionally, if you ever need a crown or work on your back molars the wisdom teeth may impinge on the molar making it impossible to crown the molar unless the teeth come out.

I have had them for 10 years and haven't had any problems yet (touch the wood). However, my dentist asked me if I wanted to have them taken out or not, as they are apparently of a slightly lower quality than the other teeth and also are not as well accessible when brushing teeth and therefore more likely to go bad.
I refused strictly because I'm a chickenshit.

Some people need their wisdom teeth extracted because they become impacted. However, some people never need their wisdom teeth removed.

If the dentist says you need to have it done, you NEED to have it done. My brother needed it when he was sixteen and didn't have it. When he was eighteen, he went blind because the wisdom tooth hit a nerve that was connected to his eyes. He had the surgery, they corrected the nerve and removed all 4 wisdom teeth, then he was fine! It IS a painful procedure (I actually just had mine out on Tuesday) but it is completely worth it. It'll hurt way worse for longer if you just keep letting them grow. Good luck!

It isn't important unless they are either growing in wrong, or coming in painfully. I had mine removed solely because of the pain.

it really isnt important, most dentist's wont bother to take them out unless they are bothering you and growing in funny (impacted). sometimes they come in around the ages of 18-21, and they grow in fine

for me there wasn't room in my mouth for them, I think that may be a major reason that most get them removed
