One thing I was told when I was getting ready to take a test over this type of information was this. When it ends in ball - Everyone plays their own ball all the time. When it ends in some they play the ball some of the times

Matches
Single: A match in which one plays against another.
Threesome: A match in which one plays against two, and each side plays one ball.
Foursome: A match in which two play against two, and each side plays one ball.
Three-Ball: A match-play competition in which three play against one another, each playing his own ball. Each player is playing two distinct matches.
Best-Ball: A match in which one plays against the better ball of two or the best ball of three players.
Four-Ball: A match in which two play their better ball against the better ball of two other players.

HERE’S A POPULAR IDEA FOR YOUR EVENT.
(four ball)

SCRAMBLE FORMAT

1. Each golfer in foursome tees off.

2. The foursome then decides which ball is in the best position to reach the green or cup. (A ball may not be selected from the “wrong fairway”)

3. The other golfers of the foursome move their golf balls to that spot and play their next shot.

4. Golfers repeat procedure until “holed” out.

E.g. Typical Played Hole

All members tee off
Player “B’s” tee shot is selected
Players A, B, C and D play the next shot from within one club length of player “B’s” ball position.
This process repeats itself until a shot is selected that is on the green and putting begins. Mark the ball. All players putt from the same spot. If the ball doesn’t go in mark the closest one. Repeat.

Putting: When on the green, the putting is over as soon as one of the foursome sinks their putt. Immediately move on to the next hole.

Whiffs: One whiff at the golf ball is counted as a stroke and the golfer will move on.

The goal is to play 18 holes in 4.5 hours and have fun doing it.!

If you are talking about the same 4-ball matches that are played in the Ryder Cup, then it is played among a foursome of golfers. Two players pair up for one team, and the other two form the other team. The two teams compete against each other in a match play game of golf. All players play their shots on the hole as they normally would. The lowest score for each team is compared and then one side either wins the hole with the lowest score or the hole is tied.
