I always thought the building engineer is who you complained to when the heat was too high. And the guy who kept the boiler from exploding!

The architect determines how the building will look and the general layout
then the structural engineer designs all the structural components to comply with the building codes

The architect deals with more of the "human" issues in the design of a building: appearance, space, lighting, form etc. He or she would have to be creative, sensitive to human needs, and artistic.
The building engineer deals with the technical side: stress on the beams, details of the joints, stability of the foundation, sizes of ventilation ducts etc. He or she would have to enjoy math and have a good mechanical aptitude.

art classes. Architects have to take more art appreciation type classes while engineers take lots more math classes. But, basically yes, the architect designs the building to achieve its purpose and the engineer makes sure materials used can keep it structurally sound.

architect draws a pretty picture, engineer figures out how to build it for-real.

architect must know a bit of engineering to make sure things he designes actually can be built - like you gotta have sufficient support for the ceiling, etc.

both are trained in the engineering fundamentals of structures such as load bearing, etc...
an architect also studies things like aesthetics and functionality
