I have found this to be true at times. When I have become very sick as a result of drinking it always follows the 2nd half of this statement.

I (and others) can drink continously without getting sick if I stick to one thing, or follow the statement. But when I haven't had as much as I normally do on a weekend and become sick, it is nearly always because of this. I never realize it until later when I think about what I drank the night before and then in what order, so I doubt it's something mental.

I think there must be a reason for this, that this little diddy actually has some truth, but have never understood why it is this way.

I am posting this under health because I feel it fits better than the drink area.

Okay, I know drinking a lot is not a good thing to do, or it's not good for me. Great. Good for you for knowing that. The question is not about the morality of alcohol. If you are going to preach to me about the evils of booze, go back to prohibition. I don't care.

I live by this too when I go out.

I heard this from someone when I was drunk...so I don't really know how true it is but.......

Your liver processes liquor more quickly than beer because beer has to break down. So, when you drink liquor first, your body is actually starting to process this, and beer first just kind of sits and mixes with all the other crap.

The way I 've heard is is "Beer before Liquor, never been sicker." But thats not important.

I don't know exactly why it is, but the same thing happens to me. I think my worst hangover ever was from 2 smirnoffs and being hotboxed in a Jeep. The night before all I drank was Vodka and I felt completely fine the next day. I think the reason is that liquor doesn't have all the crap in it that beer does.

Well shots always make me feel gross. Not for very long, but for approximately 2 seconds, I feel like death. I don't know about you, but any alcohol makes my stomach feel a little iffy. Not sick at all (i never get sick) but just a little off. Anyway though, if I was already drunk with a lot of beers in me, and then I did some shots, those 2 seconds would be a HELL of a lot worse (and usually are). I read somewhere that our bodies recognize alcohol as poison. Which is why when you're a rookie drinker, you go slow slow slow or you get sick sick sick. I don't know for sure though. But shots when I'm already feeling iffy usually suck. Which is why if I do a shot, I do it at the beginning of the night.

My theory is this:
When you stick to drinking one thing you are more likely to be able to accurately pace yourself...aka you quit before it is too late. The same goes when you drink liquor before beer. There is less alcohol in beer so you have given yourself enough time to realize how drunk you are from the liquor and you stop in a reasonable time frame. When you drink beer then liquor you are finishing off with a more potent drink and may be drunker than you realize because you have to drink less. Just a theory.

Its one of the mysteries of drunk crazy people. Might have something to do with all the bubbles in the beer.
