You may be experiencing tinnitus (ok...the spelling is off maybe, but it's a real medical condition) and it's perfectly OK, an ear, nose and throat doctor can treat this.
There's NO such thing as "perfect silence"; we all, to some degree hear 'inside' noises. Medical scientists tend to feel that "rushing noise" is blood coursing through the intricate vessels in and around our ears.
But some people, experience a sudden loud 'ringing' or 'rushing' sound that temporarily interferes with our hearing. Much like holding a sea shell to our ear. That's tinnitus.
Since I can remember, I've been deaf in one ear.....and I too experience this very same problem you now experience.
Doesn't mean life stops, either. Actor William Shatner (one of my favorites, by the way) also has tinnitus (ok...so I fell asleep in spelling class....sigh) and his life goes on full throttle.
Make an appointment to see an ear doctor. In the mean time, if you experience such sounds, try rubbing behind your ear or turn a stereo on off station so the speakers put on static noise or white noise as it's called. That should help lessen the ringing to a fading sea shell noise before going away.
ps: Hey, this spell checker feature is GREAT. Let me know how you fare on your condition. Take care.

the same thing was happening to my husband. pretty soon the loss of hearing was experienced for longer and longer times. one morning his ear popped and did not come back that whole day.
we went to the emergency room because we feared loosing his hearing. the doctor came in, and suspected it was wax build up inside his ear. we were thinking "that cant be it, we both clean our ears in the shower" so he came in with a tube that he pluged into this suction thing, and stuck the tube in my husbands ear. my husband said all that sucking in his ear was very loud, but the doctor said "wait until you see this." and then in a couple of minutes, he pulled out this thing, it looked like a potato or something, but he said it was from years and years of wax build up, and my husbands ear was very aggrivated and sore, for having this huge thing pulled out of it, but after that he could hear! i asked the doctor if i could take home the ugly things that came out of his ears, and then that really grossed out my husband, cause he was grossed out when the doctor showed him the things, so he couldent believe i wanted to take them home to show them to his mom later on when she came over. i took a picture of them just for you! here you go.

they're ugly. they even have little hairs growing out of them! i cannot belive something this big was growing in his ear! actually the doctor recomended that he really needed to get some earwax remover if he couldent make it work with the suction thing, becuase the earwax remover would have worked for sure.
but EWWW!
they are very high quality pictures, so you'll have to let them load slowly, if you have a newer browser, after your comouter is done downloading them, it should adjust the photo to automaticly fit the internet explorer window.

you need to see your doctor, you might have wax buildup in your ear and it will need to be washed out, also your sinus' could be bothering your, the get inflamed and and "push" on your ear drum causing you to hear weird things and be "off balance".......
