Most health depts in each county give away free lice treatment kits, not only do you save 5-10 dollars a box, they give you 2 boxs for each member of the house and then they will check heads for free after treatment.

You can buy this stuff at Target or Kmart - I can't remember what it's called - it's been a long time since my family had to go through all that, but it's like a shampoo. Everyone in the household will have to shampoo their hair and scrub the scalp and look for the actual bugs and the eggs (called nits). The shampoo should come with a little comb to help you comb out the nits. (Hmm... wonder where the term nit-picking came from).
You will also have to CLEAN ALOT. All the hairbrushes, combs, etc. need to be boiled in hot water to kill the bugs that could be living in them - any hair accessories should also be boiled, but cloth scrunchies you can wash. All bedsheets, blankets, pillow covers, stuffed animals - they all need to be washed. Put stuffed animals in trashbags until the epidemic is over or you will just have to clean them again.
I can't remember what my parents did with our furniture - like our couch and armchairs, but we had to wash all of the throw pillows and such as well.
It's a hassle and it is NOT fun. The only fun part about having lice was getting out of school until they were gone - about a week if I remember - a lot of other kids had it so notes were sent home with parents with instructions on how to clean everything and what to clean. I can't remember everything, though, you could do a google search for "head lice removal" and I'm sure that will help you tons.
Good luck! I'd say have fun, but it won't be fun.

Strangly (I found this out when my daughter got lice), lice is from "too clean" of hair, or overwashing. You can go to any Wal-Mart or local grocery store and buy the medicated shampoo and comb. The longer her hair, the more succeptable she is to getting lice. The shampoo and comb isn't overly expensive, and should clear it all up within a week or so.

lice as a daycare provider i have delt with this before....my advice...first stop itching...most people when they hear or see lice immediately subconsciencely start to think they have it and itch their own heads!
I know lice can come from anywhere...trying on clothes at the mall, school, the movies, friends...anywhere; but please make sure that your children are using good personal hygeine skills like regular hand washing and cleaning up food messes etc promptly and regular showering and hair cleaning.
To help with the lice itself now that it is in the home...
1...comb the hair to get out as many nits as possible before shampooing. When you cant get any more out...clean the comb...Then shampoo with a lice shampoo (from grocery or dept stores) following directions as specified. Comb out more.
repeat as needed per directions on bottle of shampoo.
2. strip the beds...all of them! wash "contaminated sheets" separately but was all of them in hot water with bleach if possible.
3. spray beds with some sort of sanitizer like Lysol and vacuum the mattresses.
4. vacuum all the carpets and wash small rugs especially bathroom rugs.
5. clean and bleach all toys played with.
6. stuffed animals need to be washed w/hot water in washer and if they can not be washed in the washer they can be put in a sealed plastic bag for 2 weeks to kill the lice.
7. wash or replace combs and brushes as well as hair accessories during treatment and especially when all lice/nits are gone. remember hats and coats too!
8. vacuum all couches and other fabric furniture....wash all other types of furniture ie leather.
9. make sure all laundry is done in timely manner in hottest settings; dont forget about dress up clothes too!
Also if you know another friend has a break out i would do a head check to verify that the lice is gone before allowing playdates...reinfection is not fun; you would need to do another complete cleaning...
Happy cleaning.

my children have had head lice one time, and we just used the normal lice shampoo. but it is really important to get all the knits out of the hair with a comb or your fingers. you can see them easier when the hair is wet. and putting some kind of oil, like veggie oil or baby oil, in the hair when getting the knits, makes it a lot easier.

you can get over the counter shampoo and then you go through the hair with a fine comb and wash all sheets and pillows, blankets in hot water. Put all stuffed animals in a bag and tie shut for a couple weeks, shampoo carpets.

You should take her to the doctor. He will give her a prescription that should kill the lice. Don't wait its a terrible problem and should be treated without delay.

just like becca wrote -- and do use the comb to remove the egg sacs on the hair follicles. also wash her clothes and clean any areas where she may have rested her head (back of the couch, for example) including her hair brush
