My boyfriend is clinically depressed, and we are planning on getting married. We love each other very much and I want to be there to help him until the day I die. But I do have some questions.

What quality of life are you able to have with them? Does it effect your family? Is it harmful for young children to be around depressed parents?

If the depressed person tries hard enough can they get better? Any words of advice?

If he is being treated or seeking treatment encourage him to continue! Depression can be like a dark cloud, only the love and support of others along with treatment will allow some sun to shine in. The questions you ask are good ones and show you have more insight than your giving yourself credit for!

It really does affect family and children. But if you really love him, you'll stick by his side no matter what. The best thing to do is to wait on having children. Try to get him better. There is nothing better for depression then somebody uplifting at your side. Once things get better, then talk about having children. It's not good for them to grow up around depressed parents.

If he is clinically depressed, he should go to doc and get some anti-depressants. They are very effective.

He has the potential to lead a very normal life.

Does he see a therapist? There are all kinds of medications that can help with depression, and he can lead a normal, happy life. I know from experience that I'm better off being on medication for my anxiety. If he is agains medication and therapy, then Yoga can also help.
