Do you have a firewall? A firewall may not allow messenger to connect. The windows firewall shouldn't cause any trouble, but just as a precaution, download the latest updates from Microsoft, by going to start>All Programs>Microsoft Update.

There is also a slight possibility that you have a virus.

I've been having problems with yahoo messenger with beta, so has my friend.

I've still been able to get on though. Try changing you're connectiion settings if you have a firewall running and set it to firewall without proxy (I think that's the one... it'll tell you when open it up).

Try checking your firewall settings. If this doesn't work, try to uninstall the software, scan your computer for viruses and spyware/adware and try reinstalling messenger.
