I think the basis of Positive thinking is that whatever your major focus is on, is the best way to make it happen. Not everything will turn out exactly as you want it too..but when your mind is focused on positive things and positive thoughts, you start producing more positive results. The best illustration I can think of is like when you bowl or golf, I was taught that when you let go of the ball in bowling, to leave your arm pointed in the direction you want the ball to go and not to put your arm down immediately. It works. But it's because some people bring their arm down just a fraction of an instant before they let go of the ball and that changes the direction of the ball. So if you leave your arm pointed where you want it to go and it's a habit to do that, then more than likely your ball will head where you want it too. And your mind works the same way. A positive minded person always believes there is a way to accomplish something and most of them do. A negative thinker almost always thinks something can't be done and because of that, they give up and it doesn't happen. You fail before you start because your mind is overwhelmed with the thought that it can't happen in the first place. When you keep your mind focused and believe that something can be done...you usually do find a way to do it. Just make sure you really want what you ask for.

There is so much positive in this world than negative. Try to think positive and you will become optimistic. Sometimes in this life it can be very difficult to be optimistic especially with all the evil around us, but, we must push onward. Life is so beautiful and God gave all this to us. Take a walk, relax on your patio or sundeck or front porch. Drink a glass of wine or a can of beer. Call a friend. Visit the sick in a hospital. Take on a new hobby. Life is so beautiful.

This is my philosophy. Happiness is the absence of frustration. Contentment is being ok with the level of frustration you have. If you are frustrated in many areas of your life, and don't see any end to the frustration, then that might lead to negative thinking.

If this is the case, I recommend an old book called "Working Smart". It had exercises in it that helps one set realistic life goals in the major facets of life, home, health, job, money, etc. If you have goals, but they are unrealistic, this too may lead you on a negative thinking path.

I've had that problem too, belive me, its a hard habbit to break, and I'm still trying.
You have to just try as hard as you can to think about why you want to be optomistic, and set goals for yourself to think more optomisticaly at least once a day. Once you can do that, move it up to twice, and try as much as you can to just look on the bright side.

Good luck.

Work at having friends with real upbeat attitudes. Read very upbeat books. Stay in situations where you get positive re-enforcement. Believe in yourself. Work on things you can finish, don't set your . expectations too high. Work on a "'CAN DO" attitude.
Belive in yourself. If all of that fails, you need outside help

Put yourself on a 'mental diet'. Just like choosing what you eat, you can chose what you think. And if there are certain activities that promote that diet, utilize them. If it is not on your diet, you don't have time for it.
