The number one cause is being over weight. You know if that applies to you or not. If it is, do something sensible about it. Focus on losing fat, not weight. Do it through diet, like high density nutrition / low calories, but keep it balanced with proper protein, vitamins and minerals - and drink lots of water! 17 ounces of water in 10 minutes raises your metabolism 30% for 3 or 4 hours. Put in reasonable excercise, like walking.

I don't have high blood pressure personally but I know that lowering your salt intake can help. Also regular excersise can get the blood flowing.

I started eating oatmeal every morning for 30 days and my b/p is lower already. Now I'm going to try a high-fiber cereal and alternate. My doctor said losing just 10 lbs helps.

Any regular aerobic excercise will help lower blood pressure.

truth be told, besides exercising, owning a pet helps lower blood pressure....by petting a dog or even watching a fish in a fish tank reduces the spiking in your blood caused by blood pressure....that's why a lot of people own pets....it reduces stress...yay for animals!

I exercise regularly, lost 40 pounds, stopped smoking and drinking, and my blood pressure decreased dramatically.
I have also started doing yoga this year and the relaxation methods taught have really helped me in my real life.

Exercise, learning to relax.
But also, go to your doctor. It's a small price to pay to risk hypertension to take a couple of pills each night. HBP runs in my family and I'm pretty active but it took a couple of pills to keep my BP in check. It's been 5 yrs now...120/80 .

2) Get a pet - something furry and responsive

4) Get enough sleep

6) Quit your job if it sucks
