Some people say that scientific creationism does a disservice to Christianity by holding Christianity up to ridicule. How would you answer that charge?

Because people, on the whole agree that modes of thought that are 2000 years old may not hold too much water. Dogmatic types who refuse to accept anything that contradicts their faith are neglectng to exercise the free will that God has provided them with. They seem to believe that everything is gift from God; but view free will as a test; challenge religion and go to hell.
I just asked a Q regarding senses, suggesting the limitations of the sensory world may eventually hold back or imaginations. A fundamentalist type answered that if we had no sense it would remove our ability to question God. She saw this as an aspirational thing! That is the mentality that you have to deal with sometimes

When God created man, He said to him, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth" (Genesis 1:28).
"Subdue it" = bring it into the jurisdiction of your mind. Man was suppose to explore the world God created and understand it. Instead, fallen man has tried to use science to disprove God. How can that be?
"For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse" (Romans 1:20).

Science defines many things, but has a very hard time explaining why.
Evolution does not validate or invalidate the existance of God anymore than looking thru a telescope at another planet and seeing little green people waving back.
In response to your earlier question to me, each and every one of us has been given a gift. It's called freewill. I can be capable of great evil and that my choice as well as yours. But with freewill also comes accountability.

two comments
one fundamentalists are ridiculous from either side of the spectrum
two if a christian wants to take his bible for allegory than rock on and bring on the understanding of "his creation" through science
i get along with the second group

There are those Christians that understands that Science is actually worth our time. They apparently also know a raving lunatic (Creatoinists that are one step away from stralling bombs to their chests and marching into schools all over the country) when they see one.

Most christians arent evolutionists. The bible clearly states that God created the earth and everything in it and God created already mature humans, not organisms that slowly evolved over billions of years.

We're not, as you know, but they should be aware that micro-evolution is a scientifically documented fact. There is a big difference between macro-evolution (one species evolving into a completely new and different species) and micro-evolution (one species developing slightly different characteristics that eventually could lead to that species being unable to breed with its original ancestors' species). Micro-evolution will create a sub-species; macro-evolution creates an entirely new species.
