I was married to a Marine...after any major deployment all you had to do was go to a bar or club, to see all the wives that were crying as the bus left, with another Marine to keep her company. It is a HUGE problem.

I agree with mpltmiller.
Cheating will happen regardless of being involved somehow with the armed services or not. Its like what happens with most long distance relationships - they don't work out because they never really had solid foundations to begin with. And that's all this military relationships are - temporary but extremely long distance.
You are also not taking into account the agreements some couples make with each other where while they are gone. Some couple allow temporary open relationships.
I know of one case where two marines and their significant others came up with a plan. There was a male marine married to a civilian and a female marine married to a civilian. Whenever they were deployed the male marine and female marine would hook up overseas and the civilian husband and wife would also hook up to "comfort each other" while their spouses are gone. The theory behind it being, its better to stick with one person you know will be safe and has been stamped approved, then go all around the place with strangers and STDs.

Yes it's a problem. One source this come from the young lonely solider. Male or female aren't always prepared for separation from family and friends. They are vulnerable and end up anyone that will give them "love". I counseled way to many troops that married the stripper from the club outside the base or ones that brought their high school sweetheart. From the first example not all strippers are bad but some do target the soldiers pay check and believe the know the pay grade better than they do! The second the new spouse is just not prepared for their part in the military partnership.
So yes cheating occurs but not anymore or less than that in civilian life.

99% may be a bit extreme. However, it is a large problem. Having retired from the Navy recently I saw it happen on numerous occasions when my ships pulled into foreign ports. Also, when they put women on the ships it became an even larger issue with crewmembers having sex underway.
There's no excuse but being seperated from your spouse for any amount of time seems to make people think they are temporarily single and it doesn't matter. I personally think it's a bunch of weak willed people that can't control themselves and live up to the words they exchanged (after all, they think, they're only words).

From what I saw it was rampant. Not only that, but blatant. Wives stepping out on their husbands two weeks after they were deployed to Iraq. Really appalling.
From what I saw, the wives were worse than the men. I think that the wives think that sicne women are at all the bases that means all the guys are cheating too. Nope. My camp had 1100 men and 12 women.

it reallty all depends...my husband is a marine and i dont think he would ever cheat on me but he has told me countless stories of wives cheating on their husbands while they are overseas...i think people get lonely...or just trashy. they are gone for long periods of time and some people cant handle being away that long without having some sort of contact intimately with someone else. it sucks!

99% of people make up their stats.
I think the military is a divorce factory but from what I hear it's not much better on the outside.

I call BS on that 99% comment... I agree that it is everywhere, but when you get down to the nuts and bolts it all has to do with what kind of person and morals are being examined

99%? I never saw that and I've been in for 23 years. I was happily married and never crossed lines with OPP. I saw two guys do that while I was in Iraq and they were sorry they did.
