Get a trim to get rid of the really dead stuff. Get a good shampoo and conditioner (especially the conditioner, it protects the hair). Invest in a good treatment, and use it once a week, even going to bed with it in your hair. If you can't afford that, put your regular conditioner in wet (towel dried) hair, and leave in overnight. Another thing that can help is getting your conditioner, and putting in a spray bottle 1part conditioner to 8 parts water. Spray on the ENDS only in the morning.
The change of colour is natural bleaching. It could be a hair colour you use, a chemical is shampoo or conditioner, but usually the sun will naturally bleach your hair. It will go red, because that is the natural pigment of the hair (blondes have no pigmentation, and if they colour they hair dark, have to make it red first). If the hair around the nape of your neck is still dark, then it's the sun bleaching it. If it worries you, but a RINSE colour that lasts 7 washes. It won't wreck your hair, makes it shiny and has great conditioners. Colour it once a week in the SAME colour for a few weeks. It will provide a base colour, so when your hair colour fades, it wont be so noticeable. If your hair is in good condition, buy a permanent colour, but only colour once a month or once every six weeks.
Good Luck!

The reasons might be... blowing it too often using dryer/blowers, using curlers and stuffs that apply heat. Also sun is one of the reasons... if you expose to sun too often then it makes your hair dry and turns the color into golden color. I do have long straight black hair, what i did to make it look always healthy... i dont use blowers too often and i dont style and apply medicines on my hair just like those coloring thing for the hair. Just shampooing and putting a conditioner on it after shampoo.

I have this problem too, I have very dry ends, what rejuvinates my hair is good product. I use Paul Mitchel, or Biolage. Yes these are pricy but a little goes a long way you would surprised. Good product in your hair makes all the difference.

Get it trimmed every 6 weeks. Also make sure you get alot of conditioner on your hair. Don't shampoo and condition every day. You can take a shower and get it wet every day, just don't wash your hair. Wash it every other day or so.

Sun can bleach your hair, have you been spending more time outside lately? my hair was the same way and it didn't get healthy until I cut it short. It's not real short. It looks a lot like the hair style on my avatar.

thats because it is probably too long for the nutrition to reach from your scalp to the ends
try the shampoos and conditioners for dry hair
and also, you can try hair butter, it works pretty good for me
