I'm getting bored with my hair and when I get bored I want to do something with it. It is long (to my bottom) and wavy thanks to my plaiting it every night.

I've always wanted curly hair and a friend suggested a perm though I'm not sure what all this includes. Are there different types of perms? What are the different charactistics? I called different places to see how much it would be and they said it depended on what type I wanted.

How long will it stay in? Is it worth 55$?

If you could include links that would be wonderful. Thank you.

That was the cheapest I found. Other places were 65,75,and 110$.

I was looking on google and found the spiral perm. Looks pretty though...

My guess is that with hair that long, it would be much more than $55. Last time I got a perm, with my hair to my shoulder blades, it cost me $90, and that was 8 years ago, or so.

Don't forget that you'll need to maintain it, with a new perm every 6-8 weeks.

There are different kinds of perms...in particular, there are different methods of curling the hair, which gives you different results. For the most part, if you want it slightly wavy, it's referred to as a "body wave". If you want ringlets, it's called a "spiral" perm.

FYI, the way a perm works is to essentially burn away parts of the hair shaft...this is what makes the curl. Obviously, this puts your long hair in jeopardy. I would definitely be cautious and consider this carefully, with this in mind.

If I were in your shoes, I would probably invest in a really good set of hot rollers...This can give you the variety you're looking for, without causing damage to your hair or your pocketbook.

You can use different size rollers on your hair to give it different degrees of curliness....the smaller the roller the tighter the curl. Perms grow out with your hair, so when your roots grow there will be no curl at the root. The more your hair grows the less the curl. 55$ is really cheap for a perm, I would be careful. You don't want to end up with a bad perm and looking like a fried poodle...

There are several different types of perms. You would need one that is compatable with your hair. You would also need a loop rod perm. That is the only one I would recommend for your lenth of hair. If you would put your lenth of hair on a regular perm rod it would be very weak and not take in places as there is too much hair on one rod. Also permenant means permenant. It will last the lifetime of the hair. In other words, if you never cut your hair the ends will always be curly but your roots will grow in straight. Also if a salon is willing to perm you at $55.00 I would be very careful. If your hair was as long as you said it would cost your $150-200 at my salon.

Wow, I have not heard about anyone wanting a perm since the '80s. Perms are permanent and you can only get rid of them if you grow them out. It's a smelly process, involving chemicals that can damage your hair too. $55 sounds kind of cheap but in my area hairdressers won't comb your hair for less than $100. There use to be spiral perms for long hair and body perms for shorter hair. If I were you, I would appreciate your straight hair - it's really in style now.
