He can always get a second opinion, but I think the doctor probably knows what he is doing, The doctor probably had the urine analyzed and knows why there is blood, but it does worry me a bit if he has not done at least an ultrasound to check and see if there is anything like a kidney stone in one of the kidneys or a growth on one of them that is causing the bleeding and infection. Ask dad if they gave him an Ultrasound. If not I would at the least ask the doctor to give him one just to be safe. Ultrasound is a device that fires sound waves through you and draws a picture of the internal organs it reflects off, one can usually see abnormalities and stones with it. It causes no pain and even the family can watch the computer screen.

It's called Hematuria. Most causes are not serious. For example, exercise may cause blood in the urine that goes away in 24 hours. Many people have blood in the urine without having any other related problems. Sometimes, blood in the urine may also be the result of a more serious problem. You just need to go get some tests done to find out exactly

How old is your father? Individuals 60 and above are at higher risk for bladder cancer.

Does he have Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy? It is most likely a UTI (urinary tract infection) if he is older and has some BPH.

Does he smoke or has he worked with industrial dyes... if so it might be bladder cancer.

Has he spent time in rivers, lakes, gone to Northern Africa? If so he might have a parasitic infection by Schistosoma Haematobium.

Does he have kidney problems or diabetes? Stones? Does he have any kidney pain (usually very painful if it is a stone, dull achy pain if it is pyelonephritis). If he is diabetic he could have papillary necrosis.

Did he recently have a sore throat? He could have had a strep infection and developed post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.

Does he have any autoimmune conditions? They can cause hematuria (blood in urine). Some signs of autoimmune conditions are chronic nasal problems or lung problems (Wegener's granulomatosis or Goodpasture's Syndrome). SLE (systemic lupus erythermatosis) can cause hematuria (does he have a butterfly shaped rash on his face and cheeks).

If you suspect cancer, you can request an ultrasound. A urine analysis will easily narrow down the problem. It measures for blood, proteins, white blood cells, casts, etc. Microscopic examination of the urine can detect crystals, Schistosoma Haematobium, abnormal cells (as in cancer), etc.

If these 3 don't work maybe you should ask the doctor why it's not working or go see another doctor. Most of the time, however, blood in urine is caused by kidney stones. A bladder or kidney infection, which is what his doctor believes it is, is also likely. It doesn't sound like his doctor, to this point, is doing anything wrong.

If there has been blood in there for a long time and he has completed at least 2 rounds of antibiotics, I would definitely get a second opinion. There is never any harm in getting a second opinion.....doctors are human also and do make mistakes.

It could be many things....but a simple urine test/culture would prove if its an infection or not.....but if it hasnt cleared up after antibiotics then you may want to seek a second opinion. If he's having alot fo pain with this then he may want to go to the ER for treatment and they can refer him to a specialist if needed...

I would say that in this case a second opinion is a GOOD thing.

My wife's Dad died of cancer and the first sign was blood..

Not to say that this is the only cause, but don't take chances.

What do you have to lose?

If the doctor has an ego, he is not a good doctor anyway...

Always remember, they are 'practicing' medicine...
