If you can get in the Air Force then do it. The Army and Marines are more for the stronger American and the Air Force is for the smarter American. I am not saying that people in the Army and Marines are dumb because they are not at all. The mental strains of combat are some of the toughest a human can endure.
No offense please to any member of the military, I was in the so called National Guard and it was full of meat heads. Do not join the national guard it was full of men who thought they were the toughest men on the planet but they didn't have the guts to join the real Army. When that was over my thoughts towards the military were jaded.
If you are serious about this than the Air Force is the way to go, You would be alot more comfortable in the Air Force than you would the Army. The Army and Marines do more field work.
I wouldn't even think about the Navy unless you are sick of looking at land and don't mind being out in the middle of the ocean for months at a time.

Nobody has mentioned the Navy. Having retired from the Navy recently I am predjudiced. However, they are all great depending on the profession you want to pursue. I am very glad I joined the Navy. I most certainly have been to more countries and explored more cultures than Soldiers, Airman, or Marines. Ships tend to pull into a lot of foreign ports. I also like the fact that I can sleep in a warm rack, eat hot food and take showers everday. Not to mention we stay off the coast and launch missiles vice seeing the whites of their eyes.
But, that being said I have a great amount of respect for the Soldiers and Marine. Very brave individuals willing to do what millions of people are afraid of doing. The Air Force does have a better standard of living then all of the others combined. However, their promotion rate seems a bit slower than other branches. The Coast Guard does most certainly have a rewarding mission that most tend to overlook in the overall scheme of things as they have always been under the Dept of Transportation (until recently, now they're under the Dept of Homeland Security).
Whatever your choice do a lot of research. Decide what career path you want (i.e do you want to shoot M16's or work on computers, would you like to get into the intelligence field or financial field) and look into which branch provides the best opportunities in the field. Other than that, promotion rates, and standard of living the benefits are basically the same.
Good luck in your decision and stay safe.

While it is true that the Air Force has a higher standard of living, it is also true the AF is downsizing........over 1,500 AF officers recevtly got laid off.....they went to PCS and were told their orders are no good, they didn't have a job anymore......I am prejudiced towards the Army, since I am in it, but have a few friends who are AF, so I get to see some of both sides of it. The Army can be gratifying, but I am sure that the AF gratifies some, as well. Like someone said before, it is entirely up to what you want. What kind of job are you interested in doing? What kind of stability do you need? Some don't mind moving all the time, others are homebodies......Just think about it, and don't rush into it. Don't let others' fears become your own in regards to Iraq and the like. Good Luck!! Hope it all works out for the best.

Do you like the thought of being stationed on a ship for months? If so, go Navy. How high did score on the asvab? Do you have a criminal record? If you scored pretty high and are clean in the record area, consider being a linguist. You learn another language in interpret for military intelligence. When you get out of the millitary you can work for a government agency and make damn good money. You have to pass one more test though called the dlab---you take it at meps. You7 can do this job with any branh----active duty......probably the most picky about your scores will be the air force.

Depends on how tough and motivated you are. I served in the Active Duty Army. Here's my recommendation in order of best idea to worst idea: Air Force - Army - Marines - Navy - Coast Guard. Also, you seem to be confused about which witch to use when. Stay away from the Nat'l Guard and reserves, very tough to make a stable life under those conditions.

as a former marine and now army soldier i work with the finest military unit in the world, special forces .
I personally would never under any circumstance at this point tell
anyone to join the military at this point. recruiters will try every trick in the book to get young kids to sign these contracts, promising thousands of dollars in bonus money but the fact is you never see it. i'm sure your father has told you alot about the army, but please rest assured once they have you amount to nothing.
I had a few problems when i got to my new unit and my chain of command was ready to kick me out of the army rather than help me with the problem. the issue was resolved, but by me. also there is a complete invasion of your private life, every aspect nothing is personal anymore. if you want to be smart about it and your less than 22 years old go to college first get a degree and go to ocs or west point. other than that i cant say too much about the air force but that would probably be your best bet.but if you were my daughter i would stongly object to any desire to join the services. if you want to work for the government take the civil service test. or research government contractors, the army employs alot of civilians with the same benefits.

It really depends on what you are looking for personally. The only way that you will be successful in any military service is if you are really happy, and the only way for that to happen in the military (especially the first years) is if you can truly align your personal goals with the mission of the organization. Really research what the mission is for each branch. After I did my research I ended up choosing a branch that I originally overlooked but once I became familiar with their goal, purpose and mission I found that it was a place I could see myself really excelling in because the truth is you are going to be forced to work your butt off and the only way that that hard work is going to become palatable is if you believe in what you are working for. I personally found that the US Coast Guard had a mission that I personally believed in, (the only military branch that has a pro-active peace time mission), it is a branch that is commonly overlooked and that is growing and changing for the good. I am not saying it is for everyone. But I am saying it is worth a look. Bottom line, familiarize yourself with each branch very well and compare yourself to that branch and make your own decision, don't let someone else make the decision for you.

I have heard the same thing.... I always thought that if I was going to join the military, it would be the Air Force... second choice would be the Marines. I think the AF offers more opportunities, but I don't know this for a fact.

If you want to learn a marketable skill (like high-tech), it's either the Navy or the Air Force. If you want to get slaughtered by IED's in a godforsaken S---hole, then the Army or Marine Corps is the way to go. If you're halfway intellegent, stay away from all four.

First off I would like to comment on all the answers you've been getting. This is the first Q&A that I have been in where all are great answers except for one or two who are completely off based. I congratulate all of you for the best answers I have ever read on this subject.
Now for the meat of the subject it all bares down to one thing. What do you feel is the most suitable branch of service for you. Sit and talk with each Recruiter and listen carefully at what they each have to offer, and don't be afraid to ask them questions and if they give you information as to what they will give you... ask them for that in writing. I can't and won't say that they will out-right lie to you but they do have a tendency to twist the truth a bit at times.
You choose what you want to do. Like one of the answers, I too am partial to the branch I served in and retired from 33 years ago. I had an excellent career and admire anyone who puts on a uniform and serves their country thru a full tour of duty.
I don't believe in a single Hero, I walk thru a National Cemetery and salute each and every one who is laid into the ground and each and everyone of them is a hero for serving their country.
It's your free choice and I admire you for it.
