First, ask your parent what they know about their own parents and grandparents. If your grandparents are alive, ask them for the same information. After a few generations it gets harder to track down good information. There are websites that can help you trace your geneology.

I'm 36 and I'm still finding out about my whole ethnic background. My grandmother died last year and her sister decided that it was up to her as the last living sibling to spill the "big family secret" that their mother was half black. We think there was also some Native American in her bloodline and are trying to get great-auntie to confirm that if she can. Add that to the Scottish, Welsh, English, French Canadian, Czech, and Polish that I already knew about... it's getting pretty crowded, but I'd love to know the rest!

What I have done... I went to www.rootsweb.com and they have message boards where you can post questions. Search for a message board starting with you last name. Then find boards with you mom's maiden name, grandmother's maiden names. What allot of people are doing nowadays is DNA genealogy. Your DNA can give you an idea where your family came from. For more info on DNA try www.familytreedna.com or www.dnaheritage.com

Trace your family tree. I know I have German, English, Norman, and even Modoc American Indian in my background...I'm still white though.
