The market for compact digital cameras is very competitive right now, and you can't go too far wrong with any mainstream camera.
But, that being said, even the best companies make a dud every so often. So you cannot rank one brand, such as Sony or Canon or Nikon, over any another in any way that matters- you need to look at specific models. I am basically a Nikon person and over the years have used 4 different CoolPix cameras and two Nikon digital SLR's, including the new D200, but the little camera I carry in my pocket at the moment is a Canon digital Ixus/ Powershot. Before buying the Cannon, I did a fair bit of research on the Web to find something small that still took good pictures. There were several cameras that were great as far as style, but the reviews suggested that they just did not take great pictures, and that is really the point.
C-net has lots of current camera reviews, or for a site more geared to cameras, look at http://www.dpreview.com.
Zero in on what is important to you, such as the simplest to use, smallest, most flexible, but whatever you do, pick one that takes good pictures (use the reviews). Great style is better done with jewelry than by choosing a camera that is cool-looking but does not take very good pictures.
All of the companies you mentioned have produced some good cameras and some not so good, so again, you need to focus in on a few specific models that fall into your price range and style, and then narrow down to the best choice for you.

I use a Nikon Coolpix for a lot of my pictures and it's great. I've also heard nothing but good about Canon Powershots. Is this a list of ones you can afford and fit your needs or is it a list of just point and shoot?

It depends on your budget.
If you want professional camera, go for Canon and NIkon in SLR models.
If you just want point and shoot, Cannon is nice, with good color balance. Panasnic Lumix on other hands, it has wide angle Leico lens. Cannon Powershot 400-500 series, they are good deals. go for bestbuy and have some store rebates..

You won't go wrong with nikon or canon considering these are the guys making the cameras the professionals are using.

It all depends on what you wanna do with it and what your budget is. All of the ones you mentioned are good quality, the most important thing to look at is the megapixels and the zoom. The more the better. I have a coolpix and I can't complain.
