Yes the other cat suffered a loss of prob his best friend. Even thou their just cats I'll bet that he still misses him. Get him a new friend to play with (I didn't mean that in a perverted way).

well we used to have two cats one was very ill and no metter how we tried it died. the other started looking for it all the time and therefore it got ran over. so we lost them both in a couple of days time... i agree with those who think that a new cat may not be capable of replacing the dead one in the heart of the other, but still it is the best u can do, isnt it. cats are not that solitary, they communicate with each other, greet ech other by rubbing nose. however if the one u have is male, i wouldnt get another male, they may hate each other - endless fights or one of them runs away and probably becomes homeless and threat to little birds

If by "barn cats" you mean they live outside full time, largely fend for themselves and have little human interaction -- I don't know. Cats are territorial and, though they love their companion kitties once established, it's hard to put two NEW cats together, especially in that kind of "survival" situation. I would imagine in that situation the territorialism would be increased and the first cat might actually run off the "new" kitty.

Yeah i think that would be a good idea as long as you can afford another cat. Keep in mind that if the remaing cat is rather old you may have to get yet another cat as well. But I would go for it.

Feral cats find each other on their own. I'm surprised you only have one. I believe in keeping cats as pets, but if you really want one outdoors, please have it spayed when you first get it before introducing it to the barn. The humane society does it on even small kittens, they don't really have to be several months old. You will have trouble catching it to take it in later. And vaccinate it. Wild cats have small protection.

yes, but not two males (if the one you have is a male), you will have to work on showing the new cat to them, so they don't feel 'intruded upon' it can lead to ugly things. supervise them for the first month or so until they feel comfortable around each other, it will take some time, but in the end it is totally worth it because you get twice the love and affection!

It is always good to have at least two cats at a time. They keep each other company and keep each other entertained. It may take awhile for the cat who is left to accept a new cat, but he/she will and they will be great mouse-hunting buddies! =)

Definitely get a new cat. Newer is always better. This especially applies to the animal world. While you are at it, you should get rid of the other one and replace it with a brand new kitten. Kittens are so cute!

If you are gone alot and the one cat will be alone, it is a good idea to have a 2nd cat. I have three and I have no trouble with them all getting along together...

I suggest you do...Bring them around each other often b/c I can tell you, the one you have isn't going to like the newcomer too well. But I've had 10-12 new cats come and go...they'll get over it and become friends.
