What about Santa Claus or Satan? Why or why not?

Incidentally, the Goddess is my "higher power" & I haven't gotten drunk in almost six years. Thanks for the encouragement but this is just a hypothetical question lol

AA claims that you can believe what you want, but that's just a ploy to get you to stay. Soon, your higher power has to be the same higher power as everyone else.

Oh, you can call Him whatever you want, as long as it's the same micro-managing God that can't cure alcoholism, only grant you a daily reprieve. Many Christians find it offensive to be told that there is something God can't do.

They'll tell you you can be an atheist and have a chair or a light bulb as a Higher Power. That's just silly. It's supposed to be silly. It's to get you into the habit of praying, and if your life gets better after you quit drinking, you'll attribute it to the prayer, and since a light bulb is silly, you'll start believing in God. Bill Wilson describes this "bait and switch" in the "12 & 12" and the Big Book.

AA is a religion unto itself, God has specific powers, must be sought in certain ways in order for Him to do certain things. And as a religion, you're required to have the same beliefs about God as the others in the group; this is why it says, "We came to believe..." and not, "I came to believe..."

yes actually! Your higher power can be anything! I know some alcoholics who pray to light posts, and thin air. It is just to get into the habit of praying till you have a connection and a better understanding. I have a friend in AA who defined their higher power as an old hippie named Larry. Larry had long hair and a long beard, little Jon Lennon sunglasses, a Hawaiian shirt and he drove a big red Cadillac convertible. That was as good a higher power as any! In fact when I am feeling really lost sometimes I pray to Larry, why not? An all powerful all knowing higher power must have a sense of humor right?

No, didn't you hear? Santa Claus ate the Easter Bunny for Thanksgiving Dinner.

I'm not, and never have been, a member of AA, but as I understand it, the only requirement is a belief in a "higher power," so if you believe the Easter Bunny is a "higher power," you would qualify.

Of course. The second step is about admitting that you are powerless over alcohol, and passing the power to someone else. It doesn't really matter who that someone else is, it's about freeing you from trying to control it yourself so that you can set about dealing with the reality of your problem. Which is what the next steps are about.

Good luck! You can do it (a day at a time) and it is worth it.

Based on your question, a box of rocks or a bag of hair would be higher powers for you.

I say why not, well....probably not Satan, I don't think he would actually care if you drink or not and you need someone who will root for you, right? Good luck!!
