As a christian... sometimes other christians come at you with the wrong approach which can cause some problems. But don't hate because they are just trying to share they're joy that christianity has brought them. it's up to you if you want to see what it is all about or not, and when you say no thanks they sometimes can get confused and defensive which is wrong.

Christianity is based on fear (and guilt), so they have no other way to try to convert people.

I'm an atheist and I do not care what others believe. I do not get points for convincing anyone to accept the truth. Nor, do I offer anyone a reward or punishment for accepting or denying the truth.

If people want to believe in myths & legends, that's their business, not mine.

Most of the attempted converting I see on this board is done by atheists trying to get people to give up their religious beliefs.

Yeah, but I just feel sorry for them.

I'm rarely rude to them, unless they are very very rude to me.

Most of the time, they seem a bit terrified that someone could live without constantly talking to "the man upstairs" or whatever they believe in.

Frequently the conversation turns into a kinda "how do you do it?" as in living without calling on a higher power.

I find that difficult to answer. It's just that I stopped believing and kept doing what I was doing....

They try and scare everyone into not only converting, but into staying in the cult.
Why do you think they invented the concept of hell? It scares the sheep and they don't run away.

No. I find christians only state the items that assist in their point of view, much like politicians. Ignoring the other details and facts means they didn't happen. The Ostrich Effect.

Religion is a tool used to control the proletariat. Religious doctrine is used to scare the masses into submission. Until the proletariat can learn to have faith in themselves, they will wander in the shadow of religion. Nothing fails like prayer!

Occasionally yeah. What's scary is when they don't even realize they're doing it. Somehow they don't realize that "you'll be tortured forever and ever amen" is a threat. I'm sure if I told them I'm going to take them down into my basement, cut them open, pour lemon juice on them, pull their fingernails out and gouge out their eyes, they'd probably want me arrested. Yet they believe that the torture they threaten me with is even WORSE than anything I could think of, and claim it's ETERNAL, and somehow think I should perfectly ok with their threats. Fat chance.

Every time. First they try persuasion; when that doesn't work they get indignant and fall back on, "well, you'll be sorry when you die and end up in hell." They're always startled when I burst into laughter.

Why would I be scared of something I don't even believe in?

all the time. fear is a powerful tool to control the masses and get them to do what ever they want people to do (aka over-riding the individual's divine will). it seems to be working fantastically in religion as well as politics, so why would they want to stop it? the sad thing is most everyday people don't know they are doing it. i get the impression that they think they are just doing good works and performing their duty as a christian.
