As someone who used to work in a poultry plant that ground the meat for hotdogs, I can tell you. At least I can tell you the Poultry part. They take all of the deboned chicken carcasses that were stripped of the meat and grind them up in a machine called a "bee-hive" the meat is then squeezed through with less than .08% calcium (bone) and mixed with additives like sugar and spices. This meat is then packaged in 2,000 lb containers and shipped to the hotdog & Bologna makers who then use the chicken meat as 'filler' along with "BEEF" that was shipped to them stripped, ground and made much the same way.

This meat is clean and sanitary. HOWEVER, if lungs, livers, kidneys, sex organs and other body parts are left in the poultry, they too are ground right along with the chicken and are forced through the bee-hive and end up in the final product. However, if you run contamination checks for bacteria it almost always comes up clean, so the meat IS FRESH and good to eat. Its just that you don't always know whats in it. : ) And yes I love Hot Dogs!!!

I think this is one of the things in life that are better left unkown...lol

But if you really want to know, hotdogs are made out of every part of an animal (chicken, for ex.) that you would not want to eat...lol

cheap hotdogs.... pretty much anything... yuck. theyre actually mostly random bits of chicken, some bread and other filler... maybe some pork fat for flavour

slightly more expensive ones will be "real" frankfurters, mainly made of pork and spice, with a noticably different (nicer!) flavour

they actually use good meat to make hot dogs, contrary to popular belief. They use mostly beef and they use hunks of meat that are left over when they cut big pieces of meat into smaller cuts.

If you buy really cheap hot dogs, this might not be true, but it's true for most of the big brands

Rent "The Great Outdoors" and watch the scene with the raccoons. That's what hot dogs are made of.

Different companies used different things like, beef, chicken, turkey, pork and soy. Beware of those that say "mechanically separated".
