this is a hard question to word, because it deals with something outside of all languages. its hard to think of it other than as an "instentual language"

Many linguists believe that humans have an innate capacity for language. They call it Universal Grammar. This theory has been proposed to account for how quickly a child learns language. In other words, our brains are "pre programmed" to learn a language. Most linguists believe that this capacity disappears around puberty, which is why it is so difficult for adults to learn a foreign language. If you're interested, you should read Pinker's book "the Language Instinct", which is an excellent introduction to this topic.

I do not think that there is a pre programmed language in humans. That is one of the Psychological aspects - the Heredity versus Environment. Psychology states that a person's personality / character etc is a Combination of both - the genetic material they inhertied and the environment and surroundings in which they were raised. Language is a completely environmental deal - the child has no gene that will enable him to speak ANYTHING until they are exposed to the parents and other people in the first few years of their life and pick it up from practice. Research the Study of *GENIE* the little girl whos parents locked her up at birth and for almost a decade kept her in an isolated room without any company, toys NOTHING. When psychologists finally got a hold of her - all of her mental abilities were horrible atraphated ( undeveloped ) and she could not speak or understand ANY language. ALl because she was not taught one, and for years was not exposed or heard anybody speak in a human language at all.
Those are the facts and my 2 cents... =)

When a child cries it only sounds the same to someone who is not the mother. Babies will have distinct cries to indicate their basic needs, this is how they communicate with us. The spoken language is only a small form of communication. Body language, tone, and volume can all convey much stronger messages then the words chosen. If there were two people who were never exposed to any language we could make the logical assumptions that they have never had social contact with man or beast. Taking into consideration that animals communicate to each other as you pointed out. Then put them in a situation where they were face to face, and there would be no communication. There would be no need for communication because they would be self sufficient, to have survived they would have to have had met all of their own needs and communication would be unnecessary.
We use communication to fill our basic needs, and because we use it one of our needs is social interaction. Without communication the need for a language is pointless.

No, we are taught our domestic language from birth. We could just as easily learn any language from birth. If two humans never exposed to language, I'm sure they would create their own language.

Different languages were caused by the Tower of Babel incident.

In a sense, we do have an instinctual language. The, coos, grunts, groans and moans that we make as infants are the essence of language. Over time we developed a way to make these sounds more specific.

There is no "natural" language. In fact, when researchers attempted to study it by raising children and *never* speaking to them, the research failed--because the children (whose physical needs were carefully attended to) all died. There have been rare cases of children who grew up around no humans. They did not speak *any* language. And they were unable to *learn* any human language.
