The most interesting electronics experiment I've ever done was in second year physics at university in 1972, when small-scale integrated circuit chips had just started to appear in shops. I made an analogue computer using operational amplifier chips. I started off by modelling simple harmonic motion, like a frictionless pendulum, or oscillating mass on a spring. Then I added friction, then a forcing term with a frequency different from the resonant frequency... There's no limit to the complexity of the system you could simulate. You could easily simulate a chaotic system. All you need are cheap components like op amp ICs, capacitors, inductors, resistors and delay lines so you could simulate hysteresis. In principle you can solve any differential equation, no matter how complex and awkward, with a few dollars worth of electronic components.

A software radio is a cool idea. You definitely would need to understand digitial communications. I'm sure your department would have the equipment to do it, so that would be low cost.

I know alot of companies are looking to hire people with experience with software radio.

Hi,

I am a grad student as well. I am designing a Radio Contolled Boat that is gas powered. This has electronics components, as well as communication components. It is cheap, challenging, and fun!
