Consider that when you marry someone you are marrying the whole family. Like it or not you will be involved in their lives and them in yours. This is not necessarily a bad thing. But it can be challenging. You must be a separate family within the family. This means that you don't go running to your respective parents/siblings when things go wrong in your small family. Work it out between yourselves and don't force your families to take sides. You can't believe how this keeps the peace with in-laws.
When my sweet hubby and I got married I vowed never to say anything bad about him to someone else. This especially meant our families. My family adores him because they've never had to take my side. Same with his family and me. It sure does make being with in-laws much easier.

Cool question - I never really would ever have this problem. I earned respect of my family many years ago and therefore they trust my choices as being the best it can be for me. My family is more concerned over my happiness then silly little hang-ups they may have. And the greatest part about it is no matter who I bring to meet my family they accept them and welcome them to the family and show the highest respect for them. Sometimes it is best to resolve these problems before they happen. They know that I do not jump before I leap and that I know the person I choose is going to bring me happiness and joy and that's enough for them.

Depends on whether or not your family are a bunch of idiots. If they are a proper family, then I would say that it's imperative.
