Say calmly but loud enough for the guy to hear "that's a man." than point to someone else in the room "and thats a woman, looks like we need to practice some more." and than walk away.

Don't answer the question. Focus on the child and remind or explain that it is not polite to point. " It's just not nice" focus on the child. Tell them to only point at someont if everyone needs to be alerted to the person. (eg. if the person needs help.)
This will take the attention off the long-hair!! (which is polite of you). Ask the child if they would want everyone in the store looking at them right now. Depends on the situation but hope it helpls a little.

Tell them that it's not polite to point or to ask such questions. Explain that both men and women can wear their hair very long or very short, and it isn't nice of us to point or stare just because they look differently. It's a good time to start teaching kids about the differences between appearances!
Take care!

Explain that it's a man and why and then be sure to apoligize (or even better have the child apoligize. It will happen but this is a learning experience.

Just tell the truth.........that he/she is a boy/girl with a long hair.........it doesn't mean anything the child don't know and just want to know.
Best wishes and good luck.

Give them an answer and tell them you will discuss it at home. When you get home tell them it is not nice to point at anyone and ask you questions about them. Let them know, if there is any questions they have to please take it up with you when you are out of ear shoot of the person they are asking about.
