Gorillas are made up of pure muscle and little to almost no fat. Thus, to supply energy to these huge muscles the gorilla needs to take in a lot of air to oxygenate the blood and prevent lactic acid build up which may prove fatal to them.

probably to help them breath in the hot climate.
it also makes it easier to pick their noses.
