No, mine also stuff things under beds, in the closet or back in their dresser drawers. I have even found their items stuffed under my bed and the cribs in the nursery! Now, I start cleaning their rooms by pulling out everything that is not put away and make a huge pile in the middle of the room. I check it when the pile is gone and start a new pile of items still not put away. Eventually, everything is handled, and sometimes they even do it right the first time so that they can get back to playing!

Like everyone else, I will say "no", they don't really clean their room. You're left with either accepting it as is, or supervising the process so closely, it's almost like you're doing the work. For me, certainly threatening that I won't vaccum won't phase them. When supervising, which I often do, I pretend I'm working with morons. I go, take a garbage bag and pick up all food related items, bottles, wrappers, etc... Then sort out clothes, clea, you hang or fold, dirty, you put in laundry hamper. Then books, papers from school or other, magazines, pens, etc... organize, get rid of what you don't need. find and put in a permanent place the rest. Then Videos, CDs, DVDs... You get the idea.

What I do with my kids is have them in the room while doing inspection. If I find something under the bed I just point it out to them and have them go under and make sure everything is out. I walk around their room and have them fix what ever they missed. That way next time they know to pick it all up because I am not doing it for them. I tell them that the only way I will vaccum their room, is if they clear the floor completely.

My 7 year-old does not do a good job when left to do it on her own, but when I specifically tell her what to do (ex:pick up your books and put them on the shelf) she does a much better job, and likes it that I am in there "helping" her. Also, we sometimes make it a game and set a timer for 5 minutes and have a cleaning race, and see if we can hurry up and get it all picked up in 5 minutes (or 2 or 10, whatever).

No, they don't actually clean their rooms.
Yes, they really do think you won't look under the bed or in the closet.
All three of mine do the same thing. My daughter sometimes puts everything on the bed and says "I'm done!" ~ if she can see the floor, the room MUST be clean! :-)

Haha, when I was a kid, EVERYTHING went into the closet and under the bed. Some kids NEVER learn. I always got caught, but I still did it. I did a better job when my mom was in there helping me. Then I would get into it.

Nope they do not clean they shuffle it around. Mine won't even stay upstairs long enough to even make it look like they put some effort into it. Then they wonder why I send them back up over and over lol.

You actually don't ask them you tell them. Then you periodically inspect while they are cleaning so they know when they have cleaned enough to satisy you. My stepdaughter comes and ask me if she is done or not.
