Online or in person? Online it's fine. In person, if it's ambiguous it's probably intentional. If they'd rather not advertise, then what business is it of yours?

Probably, but it is just as rude to be so confused about your own gender that you have to make people wonder about you. Seriously, I saw the most ugly woman I've ever seen in my office. Later I found out it was originally a guy...

Some people might get offended if you ask like that. It's better to ask something different, like what the person's name is or something else that might reveal the gender.
Except on the internet of course. Online it's normal to ask people about their gender because you don't see them.

It depends on whether you can physically see the person or not.
Say when you are chatting on-line with a person you don't know and has a name which you cannot make out. But then, if the person if right in front of you and you can see him or her physicall, why then do ask his or her gender.
All the same, its not rude to so.

Technically, I think you meant, "What sex are you?" because to ask someone's gender means what role do they prefer to play, masculine or feminine. Most people don't even know the answer to that!
And yes it is rude, but I sometimes wonder myself...

no but just be careful about how you ask someone. Some people may take offense to it. But there are some people that can pass as either gender, so I know what you mean. :)

Well, it's sad that you even have to wonder about asking such a question. It should obvious just by looking at someone, but in this in this day and age, it's hard to tell. So, although, it's not respectful, it's even more disrespectful to assume your talking to a girl, and then find out you're talking to a guy...and vice versa...because then you insult them.

Lol. Yeah, I'd be offended. You'll find out soon enough if you hang around that person. For about an entire day I thought one of my friends was a guy. Little did I realize it was a girl. I was like, whoa.

honestly yeh, its really rude to ask that. in sum cases you'll fingure it out over a couple of days, but you could always ask them anyways. rude or not, its really weird when you can't tell if someone is a guy or girl.
