I would like to be able to become more one on one with patients, the job I have now does not allow me to do so. I am very good with my hands and as a diabetic I use needles on a daily basis and have taught young children and adults how to give themselves insulin for volunteer work in the past.

If you are going to become an RN, during your training you will be taught all of the skills of phlebotomy anyway. However, you could take a phlebotomy course and work as a phlebotomist while you go to school to become an RN (since it takes much longer than the phlebotomy course). If you do, the skills you learn in the phlebotomy course will put you that much further ahead of the pace in your RN classes.

It wouldn't hurt. I work with a lot of nurses, and some hesitate to start i.v.'s or draw blood because they aren't comfortable with it. Experience will give you confidence to stick people.

You sound as though you would make a great nurse educator - a nurse who teaches patients about diabetes and shows them how to give themselves injections.

Good luck - we really need qualified nurses!

It doesn't hurt to have a few certifications under you belt...a phlebotomy certification may not make your resume "stand out" dramatically, but it is a useful and important skill to have, especially if you are a nurse.

No. You will learn how to draw blood and start IV's in school or when you are out. No one expects you to be proficient when you first get out. It just takes time and practice. Don't stress over it.

It would be useful but not necessary. You'll be trained to do IVs in nursing school.
