Depends on what you're striking. If you want to break boards or hit someone in the face, the ones that carry the least risk of injury are the sidefist (a.k.a. hammerfist) and the openfist (a.k.a. palm heel strike). For sidefist, curl your hand into a fist and hit with the side between your pinky knuckle and wrist. For openfist, open your hand and hit with the heel of your palm.

The only hand strike I do is done similarly to a hook punch, except that you use the bone on the inside of your wrist to make the strike. This is usefull in situations where you don't have much room to travel with your hand because as we all know power is generated over distance as far as strikes are concerned. While this strike does cause a fair amount of pain if it hits a bone like the skull where it is aimed, it does not cause any sort of injury or at least not as far as I have ever heard. Even so I would extremely rarely use this technique. The only situation where it comes in handy is when i've already given up a single leg takedown, they have my leg, lifted to their chest, and i can get a few hard strikes in before they take me to my back. Not a great situation, but it happens and it's good to have something prepared.

It's called hammer fist, but like any strike, takes practice to land a full blow without much pain. make a tight fist, then turn it sidways so that the pinky side of the fist is facing downword. Then bring the fist down forcefully on a solid object. The meaty part of the hand between the pinky and the wrist is what should make contact. This strike can be used in almost any directing. Just pretend that your fist is a hammer and swing. (WARNING: know your limitations......all bones do have a braking point.)

Stiffen your hand by pulling your thumb back. Not opening your thumb, but keep it down agains your hand and sliding it back.
Believe it or not, hitting with an unprotected fist is likely to break a few knuckles.
Fighting is much more compicated than it appears in the movies. That's why most people don't engage in the activity. Only professionals and trained amatures should even be in a ring. Everyone else should just behave themselves.

You've been watching too many films where people get slapped and get up again. It doesn't happen in real life as any fule with half a brain cell knows. Hope the hurt hand makes you think twice next time.

Choose your targets well. A simple rule: Hard to soft, soft to hard. Meaning: your hand is lots of small bones. Bones are hard. If you hit something big and hard (jaw, head) with something small and hard (your hand), your hand will lose. Hit soft targets with your hand, and use something with padding (forearm, etc) to strike hard targets.

You won't hurt your hand if you practice hitting with the first 2 knuckles.

If you condition your hand right and do the technique correctly, you won't injure your hand.
