I would hope that you would be fair enough to read information published by the church itself or let members of said church explain their beliefs. Wouldn't trying to find out information about the church through your church leader be kind of silly? A church leader would probably be the first to spread lies about another faith because he our she wants you to stay in your own faith and fill the plate!

I agree. Just like if you want to know about baking a cake, don't ask your local plumber, as a baker of a bakery that makes cakes. But don't just ask someone in the church that may not have a perfect understanding of their religion, not everyone thats catholic are scholar on Catholism. Ask someone who are in authority. Like a bishop or a missionary, or whoever else who should know alot.

The library. Of course the information you get from your own church is going to be biased against other religions. You shouldn't go to a church for information on judaism, but you also shouldn't go to a church for information on christianity. You want accurate information? Go to a third party, always.

Edit: feliscar1212 your analogy isn't quite right, It implies that you're asking them something they know nothing about. That's not true, you'd be asking the religious about religion. But what it is like is... asking one plumber if the plumber down the street does better work than them. How do you think they'll answer?

I go straight to the horses mouth! I am a Jehovah's Witness, and I agree wholeheartedly with your opinion. I could not hope for anyone to listen to my beliefs if I am not willing in turn, to listen to theirs. I use the library to look up information about the particular religion, and I then go to the organization to ask if I have any further questions. That's the only fair way, right? And I certainly appreciate it whenever someone has done or is doing the same thing with MY religion... it's so much nicer to speak to someone who has an INFORMED opinion rather than someone who heard something from a friend who has a friend who heard it...

I agree. Most religions advocate to be the true and only, slander all other religions and do their best to keep their followers blind to any other ideas.

You should study religion in a scientific manor where you can monitor from the outside without being sucked in. I wouldn't ask Jehovah Witness or any other religious group about their religion because they would talk in term of what they know and not in terms of what necessarily is true.

Open minded philosophy might help and to reach true religion scholars that study religion history and don't follow any in particular.

I'm Muslim and interested in what other religions believe. So I went to the bookstore and stocked up on books that explain the diferences between certaine religions and other books with answers to my questions. I would not go to a church leader with questions, they would be too biased.

That is what is so great about the internet. There are so many ways to find out information. Chat rooms, forums, reading, etc. You can hear all sorts of personal experiences with each religion or particular spiritual path.

Yeah, you definately find information that comes directly from the religion. Non-members who give out informatin will give their own interpretation of the information or will outright lie. Most religions have a website that posts beliefs, activites, and other useful information.

Wikipedia. It usually has information as well as links to information from sources that may be more deeply informed. Always a great place to start.
