Easy! Don't by a new cheaply made shoddy table. It's tacky. Go to your Goodwill / Salvation Army stores or Flea markets or consignment store! Find a good, solid table that you like in a quality wood, then sand it down ( u can rent a orbital sander cheap at Home Depot) and stain it! Minwax stain also came out with stains in COLORS! So, depending on your taste, choose your stain. Next, use polyurathane to seal it. (you may want to get creative and paint or stencil a design on top before sealing) But, trust me, it will be a great focal point AND conversation peice, and you'll be proud to tell your guests that you made it! They'll be impressed! Then you can pick up other items the same way as you get the money & keep going with cooradinating peices! It's addicting!

Use a cheap folding card table. It's perfect for 4 chairs. Cover it with a long sheet/table cloth and no one will be the wiser.

Do you have a demolition or old building parts supplier in Houston? That's if it's not still under water?Buy an old wooden door. That's the top. Then get some concrete blocks and stack to the height you want.Put door on top.Voila! A dining table. Then try an Opportunity shop for chairs etc,or advertise in your local paper.

Check out the salvation army stores if there is one near where you live. The one near me has some nice odds and ends that were donated by people who just got tired of them. I found some really nice glass end tables at a good price. The only thing is you have to take them yourself as they don't deliver and you have 24 hours after purchase.

Check garage sales. Sometimes you can get great stuff, and it is the time of year for it. But go early! The good stuff goes fast. Also local thrift and consignment stores.

Try ebay, flea markets, yard sales, or discount furniture warehouses. Some places sell unfinished wood furniture at a discount too, so you'd buy it raw and have to stain it on your own.
