Honey, write sucker across your forehead & go get him. You probably won't be able to sleep until you do. Good Luck.

Can you afford the vet care and upkeep on one more dane with out having any trouble? If yes next question.
Can you keep this new dog seperated from your dog for a period of at least two weeks?
Can you keep this dog seperate from your children for the same amount of time?
Do you have time to train with this dog as well as your own?
If you can answer these questions as a frim yes then go get the dog. If not then leave him someone will get him.
You have experience with danes and that is great the drawbacks I see are the kids and your own dog.
Are the dogs the same sex? if so pass on this dog.
Never have the same sex dogs together it just encourages aggression among them.
I am sure you could work out the problems with the new dog as Danes are such nice laid back dogs. They are not really assertive or real pushy so I am sure he would settle in.
Good luck on what ever you chose.

I own a 9 month old Dane, so take my advice from personal experience. Scratch off the e-collar. One tiny shock will have your Dane in depression mode for a week. That's their personality. As for discipline, Great Danes respond well to gentle corrections, they still need discipline, just not in rigorous amounts. For my pup we used a spray bottle. It's not a punishment, more of a distraction. She responded extremely well to it. Another suggesting is coins in a soda can. Our trainer first tried that with her, but my pup didn't respond to it. The spray bottle has done wonders though! When your Dane does something wrong, use a sharp "eh eh" and spray with the bottle. Try and make the bottle discrete, you want your dog to be more oblivious as to where it's coming from. Our pup found out it was the bottle and for awhile she'd misbehave until she saw the bottle. That through me for a loop. Barking for attention is actually highly common in Great Danes. My puppy once did it, not anymore. If she barks, use the voice correction and a spray, and completely ignore him. Don't establish eye contact when he barks, no matter how hard it is. That only encourages it. If you ignore him completely and give him the correction he'll learn not to do it. Try using a lot of positive reinforcement though. For example, if he nips at you, you correct him, and he stops, praise him. Danes do exceptionally well with positive reinforcement. Good luck!

Don't just take him without really thinking about it. Danes are big dogs - as you know - and you need to really think about whether you have enough room to support another one. Young Danes can be dangerous to young children just through their exuberance. If you suspect that you're promoting unethical treatment, don't buy it. Do you think that buying ivory helps elephants by getting it off the market? No, it creates the desire by the people doing it to do it some more. And finally, if you truly suspect wrongdoing, don't buy a dog - call the police.

If you don't take him home you will always regret it. Seven months is not too old for a dog to learn new behaviour - if he has been abused, you can save him. But keep him AWAY FROM THE KIDS until you learn to read him better - you already have a GD so you know they are great with the little ones, but you have to put their safety first.

If you feel overwhelmed, contact your local animal shelter to find an animal behaviorist to help you help him adjust to his new - and better - situation.

Good luck - you're a girl after my own heart.

What does the rest of your family think? A great dane is a big dog! Do you have enough room for him? Do you have money for food? He's cute now, but he's gonna grow!

If so... get him! I have two dogs, it's nice because they keep each other company, but I don't have kids.

That is an easy question for me because I love Great Danes but do what is best in your situation when it comes to the money.

You can't read his temperment? Ask a person who specialises in behavior to come and look at this Dane. If they can't read him, no one can.
Ask the man why he is wanting to sell this dog.
If the money is a lot, couldn't you get a younger pup instead?
Or if you do go get him and it doesn't work, are you willing to take the money loss and give him to a rescue?

Seeing as the dog is so young, you can train him to be nice with the kids and it will also have the company of another dog. Plus, your kids understand the responsibility of having a dog with them. But if your worried about opposite sexes in the dogs and having puppies, thats up to u.

if the present owner really cares about finding the dog a good home, and not just about making a buck...he'll let you leave a deposit and take the dog on a trial basis to see if he fits in with your kids and your present dog.( of course get this in writing )...if he won't......then, there's probably something wrong with the dog and you should look elsewhere...
