If money is not an issue, why an alternative.
Collars on cats are tricky -- you'd have to get a breakaway collar, which would almost defeat the purpose. Because cats get into and onto so many things, there's always the fear that they could get hung up by their collar and hurt or strangle themselves, or trap themselves completely. DO NOT put a collar on a cat that won't break away unless it's strictly indoors where it can be watched.
Tattoo is a possibility, but microchipping is the most effective and PAINLESS procedure for your kitty.

i think that microchips are the best way to have your cat returned to you if he wanders. collars and tags are okay but cats risk being hung from them if they get caught on a fence or a tree. it sounds lame, but maybe you could just put a little bit of money up from each pay check until you have saved enough for the procedure. and not all microchips are as expensive as the next brand. some people are very optimistic to believe that a cat won't wander away just because he loves you and you feed him. maybe you could see if your local humane society does microchipping for a discount. i lost my dog two years ago after having her for eight years so i'm a big believer in identifying your pet in the most effective way possible. if i had done it, i would still have my beautiful, sweet friend!

Microchips are only about $25-30 for the chip the setting of it and the registration of it.
Cats do not do well with collars as they can get hung up on things and choke. If you use a cat collar they just slip off if they get stuck on something.
As for tattooing it works but would be as much as the chip if not more. And it might not be seen on a cat with the fur. On dogs tattoos are done up the one side ofthe belly and they are big. Or on the inside of the thigh.

The microchip is just another way the government is trying to control everyone and everything.. a collar with a tag is the best. Maybe go outside with your cat and see what he does and where he goes. You may feel better.

I understand your plight with this issue. One of my cats found himself outside.. and I was very lucky to get him back. I could not bear losing one of them like that.. I was a mess just having him missing for several hours.
The best identification system besides microchips, in my opinion.. is a strong collar with easy to read tags. I typically do tons of online research to find the right collar.. one that will not get caught on something and cause problems, yet one that is strong enough to handle many circumstances.
I typically add information to tags with the pets name, and at least a telephone number for contact. It's best to get something that will not rust.. or to keep an eye on it to ensure it hasn't been damaged or numbers worn off.
Best wishes.

I have cats and we leave them outside all the time. Your cat will never run away, it loves you too much and it is hungry. Your home is where the food is at so you have absolutely nothing to worry about. So, the answer is that, an alternative would be doing nothing, because your cat will never leave.

If your cat is 6 years old, then it knows where the chow is. If he has come back he'll keep coming back. If you're that worried, get a collar with a tag with your ph# on it.

Please! You cannot spend $30? How much do you really love this cat? The reason he stays out longer and longer is because he probably found someone who really cares about him and is willing to spend thirty bucks on a microchip.
