It is because the girls that they do know are girls that they have interest in, but are only friends with because the girls are not interested in them like that; or vice-versa. People are only friends with the opposite sex if one of the parties is interested and the other is not, but accepts friendship so as not to cut the other peson down. The guys are just trying to look for someone to reciprocate their interest.

Because they're tyring to get to know them better. I met my wife through a gal I dated. This gal and I didn't click romantically but we became great friends and in turn I met all of her other friends one being the love of my life.
