UK apples are the best in the world for taste and texture, so our weather is good for something! I don't buy anything else anymore. My two faves are cox's orange pippins and worcesters.

It depends on the variety of apple but many of the big supermarkets do sell British apples. I know you can by British Royal Gala and Braeburn apples from Sainsbury's.
As for non-UK apples, not all varieties (eg. Pink Lady, Golden Delicious) are grown in the UK.

This is because of export and import prices. Some countries have cheaper product, but ship for too much money while others are opposite. Some specialty stores might have them, but the next best thing is going there and enjoying them there when you are on vacation and you are doing 2 good things at once.

It's partly to do with season. UK apples are only available for a few weeks every year. And partly to do with profit.

Because the money they save from getting slaves to grow them negates the amount it costs to ship them and they still save money. Plus they don't have to worry about workers unions etc
