It needs carpet....and bright accessories since everything is black white or silver. I kind of like the look of the unfinished ceiling though. Just add some plants that don't require much light, and plenty of colorful bright accessories and wall hangings. Or paint the walls a cheery color like pale green or blue.

Natural light may not be an option. If you have the money, concider remodeling to finish the basement. Carpet will add a great deal of light, a finished wall with a bright color such as white or tan will let light flow, and a celeing will allow you to put in celeing fan/lights or other lighting sources. With that done, you can start to add decor' such as poster or pictures. This will help. Ask the kids to help you, and let them come up with a theme for the space. Hiding the furnace and water heater in a closent will also help hide the basement look.

Finish the ceiling, or drape canvas fabric through the eaves as a sort of canopy to cover the duct work. Or, leave the ducting exposed, but paint it, like they do in some restaurants- there's a fun idea! Paint the walls a bright color. Get brightly colored (or character themed) fabric to drape over the couch as a sort of slip-cover. Find a way to block the water heater from the rest of the room (either the permanent way by making a drywall "closet", or just a cover-up, like painted wood garden lattice).

Looking at the picture, I see lots of potential! Ask the kids what appeals to them, and find creative ways to make it happen. It can be relatively inexpensive as well.

This may be a big undertaking, but have you ever thought about installing windows with window wells? It may not bring in a huge amount of sunlight, but it's a start. You may also want to consider re-arranging the house a little. Bring the TV (and whatever other toys, electronics, etc that draws them down into the basement) upstairs into a general family room. That way, not only will they be able to be exposed to more sunlight, but if they're younger kids, you'll be able to monitor what the watch on TV, etc.

How about letting them go crazy with colour on the walls? Geometrics maybe in primary colours? And then pull fabric across the ceiling to hide the ducting (muslin is very inexpensive and can be dyed easily) stapling it to the cross beams. Beanbag chairs or BIG throw pillows to lounge on. Crazy sconces on the walls for lighting? And for carpet, go to carpet stores and get there old samples for a patchwork carpet!

Good lighting, heating, colour and carpet.

If you keep it simple, get rid of unneeded clutter and make the room well painted etc the kid's will choose their own decor.

Strip lighting may look to like a hospital, but it does need to be lighter, also try and cover up piping etc. I hope you have some time and money!

Very simple! Change the dungeon every six months. After all dungeon is not dearer than the children's comfort.
