I use Frador Tincture it comes in a little orange bottle and it coats the ulcer with a protective film so bacteria can't get to it. You may need to try a couple of chemists to get it, but beware it does smart a bit - but it's worth it for a few hours of pain free time. You paint it on with a cotton bud. Amazing stuff! Aparently salt water makes them worse as they are supposed to be caused by too much salt?!

I get them all the time used to gargle with salt water, but then i tried putting pure salt on em and it hurt but they go in two days, the best thing i used was a spray called aloclair spray, but its quite expensive, i now use albesol adult strength gel, it numbs the pain and clears up within two days like using pure salt but less painful.

Zilactin, my brother had them when he had braces and that's the only thing that finally got rid of them. You might be able to get it over the counter, but I'm not sure. He got it from his orthodontist.
