Teachers must be in control of their classroom. There should be a set of established rules and consequences for those who break them. Students/Parents should sign a behavior contract, agreeing to obey those rules.
When a student uses profanity and refuses to stop, a conference should be called between the teacher, parents, and the school principal. Maybe the student is facing terrible problems at home and is crying out for help. Or, he/she just loves to disrupt class. In those cases, counseling is in order.
No matter what, teachers need peace and order to teach effectively. Those who want to learn deserve the opportunity to do so. Those who do not want to learn should be helped. Not only should they learn to respect others, but society should not give up on a troublesome child. All are precious and important.
To see an ingenious solution to the problem (High School kids), click this link. It will take you to a site that includes a "profanity worksheet" you may download. It's under "take the fun out of swearing":

This other link provides information on Class Management:

Good luck!

Profanity is disruptive and they should be given fair warning that it won't be tolerated. Students using profanity should be removed from the classroom according to whatever policy your school has, preferably an in-school suspension program.
It's normal for people to want to express theirselves, and for some people, swearing is what they identify with. Let them know you understand that, but that the classroom is not the place for it. Learning is hard enough without the disruptive atmosphere.

i actually had a converstion about this today. a lady went to a local HS to teach a class and one boy was cursing and just being very rude and ugly as he entered into her class she asked to speak to him in the hall for a moment. they walked into the hall and she told him that she was a professional and she had not disrespected him in any way, and she expected him to have the same courtesy and act like an adult while he was in her class, and just basically in a nice way let him know she did not appreciate it and she did not like it, adn it would not be tolerated... she said that the boy was attentive and very polite from there on out.
i don't know how well that would work on all kids though, but my other options would be detention, suspension, calling their parents etc.... that can be a tough challenge since most kids curse just because they hear others do it on TV and movies all the time and it's "cool".

A cuss jar. Every time a child says a bad word in class, they have to put a quarter in a jar. If they don't have one, start a tab and keep track of each kid. Once a month, send the "bill" to the parents. That should stop it. The money that's raised gets put toward your summer vacation.

They may be trying to get a rise out of you - testing their limits. Set firm limits about what's appropriate and what's unacceptable in the classroom and set punishments for unacceptable behavior. Don't go crazy and get p.o.'ed - that's what they want!
Good luck!

Soap on a rope would work, a community one so that each person who gets to put their mouth on it also gets grossed out cause someone else's mouth was on it.
