I do not agree with it personally, but they probably have strong beliefs that their religion is the correct way to live so they want to try to help convert others into this correct life. I guess it is kinda like if I know how to build a computer one way and I see you building a computer a different way from me. I stop buy to teach you how to do it the "correct way" because I feel my way is the correct way.

Because a lot of Christians believe that since Jesus went out to the people, then by example, Christians should go out to the people (and teach, minister, convert, etc.) There are also places in the bible that say go out and spread the word. And just like most major religions, Christians believe that their truth is the only real truth and that people will go to hell if they don't believe.

Mark 16:15-16 "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." Alot of Christians think that this gives them the right to judge you, criticize you and try to make you feel guilty and inferior. Our job as Christians is to reach out to those who don't believe, give them God's word and let them decide whether or not to accept Jesus. We are not supposed to drag people to God kicking and screaming. If more Christians understood this,we would be more successful in bringing people to God and we wouldn't be hated as much as we are these days.

It's a command.

Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

If you were standing in the middle of the road, and a truck was coming, wouldn't you want to be warned? You might not want to move - the asphalt's nice and warm - but the only compassionate thing to do is to tell you that you are in danger.

The best way I can explain it, apart from saying we were told to go out in the world and be "fishers of men", is to compare it to what happened frequently in old San Francisco, during the goldrush. Whenver someone found gold, whether they meant to or not, they would shout "gold, gold". It was a combination of ecstasy, pride, incredibility, that something precious, that works and is of value has been found and you want people to know and the news is shared.
If you find something good, would you keep it to yourself when you know it can ease people's mind, stop anxiety about
"tomorrow", be in communion with God who promised He would never leave us, no matter what life throws at us.

If you had that info as a gift, wouldn't you share?

If you are about to jump off a bridge, far fetched I know but work with me, it would be expected of me to tell you that what you are doing is wrong. Right? Well, as christians we believe that all who do not accept Jesus as their savior are in a way throwing themselves off a bridge. The punishment for not believing in Christ is eternity in Hell, so is it so bad that christians want to save you from that?

Probably a better question would be:
Why did Jesus tell people to believe in and follow him in order to have eternal life?
-in reality, Christians are just trying to follow Jesus. That is why Christians try to get people to follow the Savior.

Most people are taught that their religion is the correct (thus, only) way to go. Christianity is little different than other religions. Proselytizing (attempting to convert non-believers) is the proven way to recruit new members, so they do it.

As some of the others said, God/Jesus told us to go out and be fishers of men. I am a Christian and it makes me so sad when I see some of my best friends, go out, do drugs, and a hole bunch of other crap, and I realize, Man, do they need God in their lives! God can help them take all that and throw that into a trashcan! I mean, I just became a Christian and I am soo glad that one of my friends told me about Jesus! I mean, just to think of going to hell makes me get goosebumps. I don't want to burn up for eternity!

because Christians don't want non-christians to go to Hell
and spend their eternity there.
JESUS said : and so also James and John, sons of Zebedee,
who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon,
"Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men."
Jesus said preach the Gospel to all nations, all around the world.
